Basically because your sole aim is to relax. There is no development being sought. No answers. Nothing. Just pure relaxation. As such it is incredibly simple.
So when are the good times to be doing this? Basically any time. Unless you are operating any kind of machinery or vehicle that is.
Some of the best times are when you get home from work. In the evening before you go to sleep. When you wake up in the morning, to set you up for the day. Or whenever else you feel is appropriate. As long as it is safe to do so of course.
The key here is relaxing mind, body and spirit. One of the easiest ways to do this is through breathing.
When you breathe deeply and slowly, your body naturally relaxes. As does your mind and spirit. Everything just slows down.
Under stress the breathing rate increases as does heart rate. Basically because the body requires more oxygen for the energy being burned off. Some stress conditions massively amplify this.
When relaxing, far less energy is being burnt. As such your body requires less oxygen. So your heart is able to slow down. As is your breathing.
Interestingly, just by slowing your breathing you can begin to relax your body. There is an automatic association in your mind here. It expects to relax when breathing slows.
So if you consciously slow your breathing, you will begin to relax. How you take it from there is up to you entirely.
There is of course more that you can do.
Working with aromas that you enjoy can prove good. Providing they have a calming effect of course. If an aroma raises your pulse rate, then switching to one that relaxes it would be worthwhile.
Aroma can be used in different ways. Flowers, herbs, essential oils, incense, all these things can be good. They are of course very much down to your preference.
Candles also have a very calming effect. So using them can have a wonderful effect. Just be careful with them.
Music again can have a great effect. Non-vocal, soothing instrumental music especially. For this there is a huge variety available. A recommendation for you is to listen to some tracks before purchasing anything. Make sure that any CDs or mp3s are to your liking. Whatever you choose has to be suitable for you.
By this virtue you can also work with guided meditations. Again there are lots out there and checking a few is a good idea.
Working with guided meditations can massively help you when you first start. The reason? Basically the take the pressure off. You just follow the instructions. Sit or lie back. And enjoy the journey.

Close your eyes, and become aware of your breathing. Allow it to deepen and slow. Easily. Naturally. Just drifting deeper.
As you do this become aware for your body. Become aware of all of your muscles. Your nerve endings. Your joints. Start to consciously relax them. Drifting deeper into relaxation every time you exhale.
And feeling your body relax, your mind will relax too. Just allow it to drift away. Away to a calm and soothing place. Maybe a beach, or a grassy field, or wherever. It’s totally your choice. Just go where you feel is right for you.
Maybe you wish to enjoy soothing sunshine. Maybe the cool feeling of lush grass. It is totally up to you.
Be still in that place. Take a stroll. Go explore. Again, all up to you. Do whatever you feel is right for you to do. Allow your mind to just go free with it. And for as long as you feel is right.
Once you are ready, just choose to come back into your body. Gently opening your eyes. Staying still for a moment, and giving thanks for the relaxation and experience.
So why do we give thanks after meditating? What is the point of this gratitude?
In simple terms you are sending a message to yourself that you enjoyed yourself. That you feel good. That you feel thankful.
When you do this vocally it creates a powerful effect psychologically. It creates a stronger ability to relax. A deeper ability to relax more, and also more easily. Your mind develops a stronger association with relaxation being good for you. It attaches greater importance to it.
Something which massively improves your life. Through every waking moment.
